WASHINGTON — The Consumer Price Index for baked foods and cereal products in January rose 0.5% from December, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. The gain follows a gain of 0.2% in December.

The January index for Cereals and Bakery Products before seasonal adjustment was 254.4% of the 1982-84 average, up 10.1% from a year ago. For all food at home, the January index was 219.7, up 0.5% from December and up 5.4% from January 2008.

The C.P.I. for Cereals and Cereal Products in January was 223.5, up 0.4% from December and up 11.1% from January 2008. The index for products within this category included: flour and prepared mixes, 237.4, up 3.2% from December and up 14.8% from the previous year; breakfast cereal, 217, down 0.4% from the previous month but up 6.4% from a year ago; and rice, pasta and corn meal, 234.6, up 0.7% from December and up 17.3% from January 2008.

The price index for Bakery Products in January was 270.9, up 0.6% from December and up 9.7% from January 2008.

The January index for bread was 164.9, down 0.5% from December but up 9.8% from January 2008. Under this heading, the C.P.I. for white bread was 301.1, down 1.2% from December but up 9.3% from January 2008. For bread other than white, the index was 315.5, up 0.7% from December and up 10.3% from a year ago.

The price index for fresh biscuits, rolls and muffins in January was 157.6, down 0.8% from December but up 9.9% from January 2008. The January index for cakes, cupcakes and cookies was 249.8, up 0.4% from December and up 8.8% from January 2008. Under this segment, other price indexes included fresh cakes and cupcakes, 255.7, down 0.1% from December but up 6.9% from January 2008; and cookies, 243.7, up 1.1% from the previous month and up 10.9% from the previous year.

The C.P.I. for other bakery products in January was 247.2, up 2.5% from December and up 10.3% from January 2008. Under this heading, other price indexes in January included: fresh sweet rolls, coffee cakes and donuts, 253.4, up 1.2% from December and up 7.9% from January 2007; crackers and cracker products, 290.1, up 4.2% from December and up 12.1% from January 2008; and frozen and refrigerated bakery products, pies, tarts and turnovers, 250.2, up 0.6% from December and up 8.3% from the previous year.
