CHICAGO — About 64% of lunches are school provided, 28% are carried from home, and 8% are obtained from other sources, according to the NPD Group.

Top school prepared food and beverages consumed by children ages 6 to 12 are milk, sandwiches, fruit and fruit salad, pizza, chicken, french fries, tap water and cookies. In fact, 77% of students consume milk and 44% of students eat sandwiches.

The top foods and beverages students at secondary school cafeterias choose are milk, sandwiches, bottled water, pizza, fruit, burgers and vegetables. Milk and sandwiches were included in more meals this past year with bottled water and pizza dropping.
