WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread and whole wheat bread rose in September, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 138.6c, up 1.4c per lb from August and up 4.6c from September 2009. At 138.6c, white pan bread was at its highest average price since it was 139c in December 2009. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread rose in two regions — up 7.2c in the Northeast and up 6.4c in the West — and fell in two regions — down 1.7c in the South and down 0.6c in the Midwest.

At 177.4c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 9.3c per lb from August but down 9.2c per lb from September 2009. The retail price for whole wheat bread had fallen for four straight months before the sharp increase during September.

The national average price of family flour in September was 48.3c per lb, down 0.6c from August and down 2.7c from September 2009.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in September was 114.8c per lb, up 3c from August and up 0.7c from September 2009. Chocolate chip cookies were 321.7c per lb, down 1.3c from August but up 12.5c from September 2009.
