WASHINGTON — October production of nonfat dry milk was up 24% from the previous year and production of skim milk powders was up 72%, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Dairy Products Report.
Nonfat dry milk production was 115,286,000 lbs, up 6% from 109,296,000 lbs in September and up 24% from 92,800,000 lbs in October 2009. Output of skim milk powders was 17,522,000 lbs, up slightly from 17,469,000 lbs in September and up 72% from 10,174,000 lbs a year ago.

Manufacturers’ stocks of edible nonfat dry milk on Oct. 31 were 123,855,000 lbs, down 11% from 139,344,000 lbs in September but up 36% from 90,864,000 lbs in October 2009. October nonfat dry milk shipments were 129,064,000 lbs, down 1% from 130,365,000 lbs in September but up 11% from 115,987,000 lbs in October 2009.

Total dry whey production was 79,048,000 lbs, up 1% from 78,126,000 lbs in September but down 3% from 81,709,000 lbs in October 2009. Production of lactose was 74,020,000 lbs, down 3% from 76,136,000 lbs in September but up 16% from 63,926,000 lbs in October 2009. Whey protein concentrate production in October totaled 35,362,000 lbs, down 1% from 35,728,000 lbs in September and down 1% from 35,830,000 lbs in October 2009. Dry buttermilk outturn was 5,989,000 lbs, up 8% from 5,542,000 lbs in September and down slightly from 6,005,000 lbs in October 2009.

Total manufacturers stocks of dry whey on Oct. 31 were 41,476,000 lbs, up 5% from 39,686,000 lbs in October 2009, including 40,181,000 lbs for human use, up 5%, and 1,295,000 lbs for animal use, down 14%. Total lactose stocks were 81,734,000 lbs, up 52% from the same month a year ago. Whey protein concentrate stocks totaled 29,600,000 lbs, down 17% from the same month last year. Dry buttermilk stocks were 9,877,000 lbs, up 153% from a year earlier.

Butter production in October was 121,559,000 lbs, up 7% from September and up 8% from October 2009. Total cheese production in October was 892,625,000 lbs, up 2% from September and up 4% from October 2009. Production of regular hard ice cream totaled 61,264,000 lbs, down 17% from September and down 11% from October 2009. Low-fat ice cream production was 27,924,000 lbs, down 17% from September and down 2% from October 2009.
