WASHINGTON — The preliminary national average price received by farmers for all wheat in April was $4.69 per bu, down 1c from March and down $1.06 from $5.75 in April 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Agriculture Prices report.

The average price paid for winter wheat in April was $4.33 a bu, down 12c from $4.45 in March and down 93c from $5.26 in April 2009. The average price paid for durum was $4.92 a bu, up 35c from $4.57 in March but down $2.26 from $7.18 in April 2009. Spring wheat other than durum averaged $5.12 a bu in April, up 8c from $5.04 in March but down $1.37 from $6.49 in April 2009.


The average price paid for rough rice was $14.10 a cwt, up 10c from March but down 90c from $15 in April 2009.

The April index of prices received for food grains was 170 compared with the 1990-92 base of 100, unchanged from the previous month’s revised level but down 15% from 200 in April 2009.

The April index for feed grains was 151, down 1% from a revised 153 last month and down 10% from 168 in April 2009. The average price received for corn in April was $3.51 a bu, down 4c from March and down 34c from $3.85 in April 2009. Farmers received an average of $5.31 a cwt for grain sorghum in April, down 37c from $5.68 in March and down 26c from $5.57 in April 2009. The average price paid for oats in April was $2.04 a bu, down 24c from $2.28 in March and down 33c from $2.37 in April of the previous year.

The U.S.D.A. index of April prices received for oil-bearing crops was 169, up 1% from a revised 167 in March but down 3% from 175 April 2009. The national average price paid to farmers for soybeans was $9.48 a bu, up 9c from $9.39 in March but down 31c from $9.79 in April 2009.

The April index for dairy products was 112, down 1% from a revised 113 in March but up 23% from 91 in April 2008. The average price paid for manufacturing grade milk in April was $13.70 a cwt, up 30c from $13.40 in March and up $2.30 from $11.40 in April 2009.

The egg and poultry index was 143, down 10% from 159 in March but up 2% from 140 in April 2009. The average price paid to farmers for all eggs was 88.6c a dozen, down 13.4c from $1.02 in March and down 17.4c from $1.06 in April 2009.
