WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14.8 billion lbs in September, up 2% from September 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for August was revised to 15.3 billion lbs, up 2% from August 2010 and an increase of 17 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.

Production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,742 lbs in September, up 12 lbs from September 2010. There were 8.47 million dairy cows on farms during the month, which was 101,000 head more than in September 2010 and 1,000 head more than in August 2011.
