WASHINGTON — The Consumer Price Index for baked foods and cereal products rose 0.1% in November after climbing 0.5% in October and 0.4% in September, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. The index for all food at home, meanwhile, fell 0.3% after gaining 0.2% in October and 0.6% in September.

Of the 18 items followed by Milling & Baking News, 8 posted month-over-month gains, while 10 finished lower.

The November index for Cereals and Bakery Products before seasonal adjustment was 265.6% of the 1982-84 average, up 5.9% from a year ago. For all food at home, the November index was 229.4, up 5.6% from November 2010.

The C.P.I. for cereals and cereal products in November was 232.8, up 1.1% from October and up 7.9% from November 2010. The index for products within this category included: flour and prepared mixes, 242.2, down 1.5% from October but up 11.1% from the previous year; breakfast cereal, 227.7, up 1.8% from the previous month and up 6.2% from a year ago; and rice, pasta and corn meal, 243.3, up 0.9% from October and up 9.5% from November 2010.

The price index for bakery products in November was 283, down 0.5% from October but up 4.9% from November 2010.

The November index for bread was 171.2, down 1.2% from October but up 5.7% from November 2010. Under this heading, the C.P.I. for white bread was 309.8, down 1.9% from October but up 4.6% from November 2010. For bread other than white, the index was 332.6, down 1.2% from October but up 7.5% from a year ago.

The price index for fresh biscuits, rolls and muffins in November was 168, down 0.1% from October but up 5.8% from November 2010. The November index for cakes, cupcakes and cookies was 266.3, up 1.8% from October and up 4.3% from November 2010. Under this segment, other price indexes included fresh cakes and cupcakes, 277.4, up 2.4% from October and up 5.7% from November 2010; and cookies, 255.6, up 1.7% from the previous month and up 2.9% from the previous year.

The C.P.I. for other bakery products in November was 252.7, down 1.9% from October but up 4.3% from November 2010. Under this heading, other price indexes in November included: fresh sweet rolls, coffee cakes and donuts, 271.5, up 0.4% from October and up 6.4% from November 2010; crackers and cracker products, 294, down 2.1% from October but up 5.5% from November 2010; and frozen and refrigerated bakery products, pies, tarts and turnovers, 258.8, down 2.9% from October but up 2.9% from the previous year.
