June nonfat dry milk production up 6%

WASHINGTON — June production of nonfat dry milk was up 6% from the previous year and production of skim milk powders was up 2%, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Dairy Products Report.

Nonfat dry milk production was 145,720,000 lbs, down 2% from 148,024,000 lbs in May but up 6% from 136,990,000 lbs in June 2010. Output of skim milk powders was 33,284,000 lbs, down 7% from 35,667,000 in May but up 2% from 32,708,000 lbs last year.

Manufacturers’ stocks of edible nonfat dry milk were 188,505,000 lbs, up 14% from 165,972,000 lbs in May and up 7% from 176,966,000 lbs in June 2010. May nonfat dry milk shipments were 118,136,000 lbs, down 6% from 126,137,000 lbs in May but up 14% from 103,706,000 lbs in June 2010.

Total dry whey production was 83,975,000 lbs, down 8% from 91,532,000 lbs in May and down 2% from 86,045,000 lbs in June 2010. Production of lactose was 88,902,000 lbs, up 3% from 86,002,000 lbs in May and up 13% from 78,516,000 lbs in June 2010. Whey protein concentrate production totaled 36,863,000 lbs, up slightly from 36,839,000 lbs in May and up 4% from 35,307,000 lbs in June 2010. June dry buttermilk outturn was 7,473,000 lbs, down 10% from 8,283,000 lbs in May but up 31% from 5,690,000 lbs in June 2010.

Total manufacturers stocks of dry whey on June 30, 2011, were 46,560,000 lbs, down 8% from 50,657,000 lbs in May and down 9% from 51,129,000 lbs in June 2010. Total lactose stocks were 4,530,000 lbs, down 5% from 4,768,000 lbs in May and down 56% from 10,274,000 lbs in June 2010. Whey protein concentrate stocks totaled 35,154,000 lbs, up 11% from 31,774,000 lbs in May but down 6% from 37,238,000 lbs in June 2010.

Dry buttermilk stocks totaled 18,709,000 lbs, up 6% from 17,717,000 lbs in May and up 110% from 8,932,000 lbs in June 2010.

Butter production in June 2011 was 140,669,000 lbs, down 10% from 155,481,000 lbs in May but up 20% from 117,089,000 lbs in June 2010. Total cheese production in June was 894,084,000 lbs, down 2% from 915,503,000 lbs in May but up 1% from 882,560,000 lbs in June 2010.

Production of regular hard ice cream totaled 76,441,000 gallons, up 2% from 74,980,000 gallons in May but down 8% from 82,939,000 gallons in June 2010. Low-fat ice cream production was 43,118,000 gallons, up 11% from 38,848,000 gallons in May and up 2% from 42,383,000 gallons in June 2010.
