WASHINGTON — The Consumer Price Index for baked foods and cereal products rose 0.3% in January after climbing 0.1% in both December and November, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. The index for all food at home, meanwhile, rose 0.7% after climbing 0.3% in December.

Of the 18 items followed by Milling & Baking News, 10 posted month-over-month gains, 7 finished lower and one was unchanged.

The January index for Cereals and Bakery Products before seasonal adjustment was 266.7% of the 1982-84 average, up 5% from a year ago. For all food at home, the January index was 231.7, up 5% from January 2011.

The C.P.I. for cereals and cereal products in January was 234.2, up 0.3% from December and up 6% from January 2011. The index for products within this category included: flour and prepared mixes, 252.2, up 3.6% from December and up 8.9% from the previous year; breakfast cereal, 228.7, down 0.3% from the previous month but up 5.6% from a year ago; and rice, pasta and corn meal, 243, up 0.3% from December and up 5.7% from January 2011.

The price index for bakery products in January was 283.9, up 0.2% from December and up 4.5% from January 2011.

The January index for bread was 170.7, down 1.1% from December but up 4.6% from January 2011. Under this heading, the C.P.I. for white bread was 309.4, down 1.4% from December but up 3.8% from January 2011. For bread other than white, the index was 328.7, down 2.4% from December but up 5% from a year ago.

The price index for fresh biscuits, rolls and muffins in January was 167.9, unchanged from December and up 5% from January 2011. The January index for cakes, cupcakes and cookies was 263.4, down 0.8% from December but up 3.4% from January 2011. Under this segment, other price indexes included fresh cakes and cupcakes, 271.5, down 1.2% from December but up 3.3% from January 2011; and cookies, 255.8, down 0.4% from the previous month but up 4.2% from the previous year.

The C.P.I. for other bakery products in January was 258.4, up 2.4% from December and up 5.1% from January 2011. Under this heading, other price indexes in January included: fresh sweet rolls, coffee cakes and donuts, 273.8, up 1.9% from December and up 7.2% from January 2011; crackers and cracker products, 299.4, up 2.3% from December and up 5.2% from January 2011; and frozen and refrigerated bakery products, pies, tarts and turnovers, 269.7, up 2.7% from December and up 4.9% from the previous year.
