WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 16 billion lbs in April, up 3.3% from April 2011, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Milk Production report.

Milk production for March was revised to 16.4 billion lbs, up 4.3% from March 2011 and a decrease of 5 million lbs from last month’s preliminary estimate.

April production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,875 lbs, up 40 lbs from April 2011. There were 8.53 million dairy cows on farms during the month, 94,000 head more than in April 2011 and 4,000 more than in March 2012.
