Alum

Alum. Any in a series of double salts (q.v.) combining aluminum sulfate and the sulfate of a monovalent metal, a common example being soda alum (Na2SO4.Al2(SO4)3. 24 H2O), a compound known commercially as SAS that finds use as the acidic ingredient in one type of baking powder (q.v.).
