Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)

Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD). The amount of oxygen, expressed in milligram per liter (q.v.), required by suitable microorganisms (q.v.) in biological sewage treatment systems to stabilize the organic waste substances that an effluent may contain in a suspended, colloidal or dissolved state; it thus affords an indication of the level of pollution present in a given waste water.
