Cake

Cake. A sweet, usually finely textured food product, baked in various forms that differ in size and configuration. It generally contains such ingredients as soft wheat flour (q.v.), milk (q.v.) or other liquids, sugar (q.v.), eggs, chemical leaveners (q.v.), flavor extracts (q.v.) and spices (q.v.), as well as others that may or may not include shortening (q.v.). Cake varieties cover a wide range, from pound cake (q.v.) to yellow and white layer cakes (q.v.), cakes containing chocolate (q.v.) and cocoa (q.v.) products, sponge cakes (q.v.), angel food cake (q.v.), fruit cakes (q.v.) and foam-type cakes (q.v.), doughnuts (q.v.), and many others.
