An extremely reactive gas that occurs in nature only in the form of its salts, e.g. sodium chloride (q.v.), potassium chloride (q.v.), magnesium chloride, etc., from which it is produced commercially by various methods. Chlorine has a wide range of industrial applications, both as a gas and in the form of its various derivatives.
