Gallon

Gallon. A unit of liquid measure, now used mainly in the U.S. where it is equal to 231 cubic inches, or 3.785 liters (q.v.) in the metric system (q.v.). The British imperial gallon, whose use has now been largely phased out, has a larger capacity, namely 277.4 cubic inches, or 4.576 liters.
