Karaya Gum

Karaya Gum. The exudate of an Asian tree, Sterculia urens, also known as kutira gum, it is similar to tragacanth (q.v.) and is sometime substituted for it. It disperses slowly in water to yield highly viscous solutions and serves as a stabilizing or thickening agent (q.v.) in some fillings (q.v.) and toppings (q.v.).
