Mechanical Refrigeration

Mechanical Refrigeration. Temperature reduction with a refrigeration system in which an electrically-powered compressor (q.v.) converts a low density vaporized refrigerant (q.v.) into a liquid through compression and cooling. The liquefied refrigerant then enters the low-pressure evaporator (q.v.), where it vaporizes and in the process absorbs sufficient heat to produce the desired cooling effect.
