Metric System. A decimal system of weights and measures, officially adopted in most countries, whose basic units are the meter (q.v.) for length, the liter (q.v.) for volume, and the kilogram (q.v.) for weight. For units of the next larger or smaller category of each, the standard measures are either multiplied or divided by a factor of 10. Temperatures are expressed in degree Celsius (¦C), with the span between boiling and freezing points of water being 100¦.
