Paste. Any type of semisoft, smooth mixture consisting of finely ground or macerated fruits, nuts (q.v.), fats (q.v.), sweeteners (q.v.), flour (q.v.), spices (q.v.), flavorings (q.v.), etc., that contains sufficient liquid or moisture to impart to it a pliable or plastic consistency (q.v.). Examples include almond paste (q.v.), puff paste (q.v.), pie and pastry doughs (q.v.), and others.
