Pie. A baked food consisting of a pastry (q.v.) bottom crust (q.v.) with any of various kinds of filling, as fruit, meat, pudding, etc., usually topped or covered with a pastry crust, as in the case of apple pie (q.v.), meat pie (q.v.), etc., or with a cream, as with the various cream pies (q.v.). Also, a small, fried pie (q.v.) consisting of a golden brown crust that encloses a fruit filling and is deep-fat fried (q.v.) as a doughnut (q.v.). Finally, a layer of cake (q.v.) topped by jam (q.v.), pudding or cream (q.v.), such as chocolate cream pie.
