Saccharide. An organic compound made up of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen - with the ratio of the latter two elements being 2 : l, respectively, as in water - and belonging to the category of carbohydrates (q.v.). Saccharides are usually grouped into monosaccharides (q.v.), disaccharides (q.v.), and polysaccharides (q.v.), and thus include simple and complex sugars, dextrins (q.v.), starches (q.v.), and other carbohydrates.
