Specific Heat. The number of calories (q.v.) required to raise the temperature (q.v.) of 1 gram (q.v.) of a substance by 1¦C, or the number of British Thermal Units (Btu) (q.v.) required per pound per ¦F which, in the case of water (q.v.) as the standard, is 1 Btu.
