Walnut. The edible fruit or nut (q.v.) of any tree of the genus Juglans that is grown in northern temperate regions, especially that of Juglans reglia, usually differentiated as the English walnut. The nut meats are enclosed in a thick-walled, hard shell or husk and, in baking, are used as adjuncts in cakes (q.v.) and confectionery (q.v.). Related nut varieties include the hickory nut and pecan (q.v.).
