WASHINGTON — The preliminary national average price received by farmers for all wheat in January was $8.10 per bu, down 19c from $8.29 in December but up $1.05 from $7.05 in January 2012, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Agricultural Prices report.

The average price paid for winter wheat in January was $8.08 per bu, down 7c from $8.15 in December but up $1.51 from $6.57 in January 2012. The average price paid for durum was $8.09 per bu, down 22c from $8.31 in December 2012 and down 75c from $8.84 in January 2012. Spring wheat other than durum averaged $8.14 per bu, down 32c from $8.46 per bu in December but up 5c from in January 2012.

The average price paid for all rice was $15 a cwt, up 40c from $14.60 in December 2012 but down 20c from $15.20 in January 2012.

The January index of prices received by farmers for food grains was 259 compared with the 1990-92 base of 100, down 3% from 266 in December but up 11% from 233 in January 2012.

The January index of feed grains was 301, up 2% from 294 in December and up 15% from 261 in January 2012. The average price paid to farmers for corn was $6.98 per bu, up 11c from $6.87 in December and up 91c from $6.07 in January 2012. Farmers received an average of $12.10 a cwt for grain sorghum in January, down 10c from December but up $1.30 from $10.80 in January 2012. The average price paid for oats in January was $3.93 a bu, down 1c from December but up 37c from $3.56 in January 2012.

The index of January prices received for oilseeds was 250, down 2% from 254 in December but up 17% from 214 in January 2012. Farmers received an average of $14.10 a bu for soybeans in January, down 20c from $14.30 in December but up $2.20 from $11.90 in January 2012.

The January index for dairy products was 153, down 4% from 160 in December but up 6% from 145 in January 2012. The average price paid for all milk in January was $20 a cwt, down 90c from $20.90 in December but up $1 from $19 in January 2012.

The January poultry and egg index was 188, up 4% from 181 in December and up 23% from 153 in January 2012. The average price paid to farmers for all eggs in January was $1.06 a dozen, down 7c from $1.13 in December but up 18c from 88c in January 2012.
