WASHINGTON — April production of edible nonfat dry milk was 160,780,000 lbs, up 7% from March but down 16% from April 2012, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest Dairy Products report.

Manufacturers’ stocks of edible nonfat dry milk were 193,095,000 lbs, down 17% from March and down 14% from April 2012. April shipments were 175,919,000 lbs, up 22% from March and up 3% from April 2012.

Output of skim milk powders was 39,378,000 lbs, down 17% from March but up 111% from April 2012.

Total dry whey production was 81,975,000 lbs, down 2% from March and down 3% from April 2012.

Production of lactose was 88,956,000 lbs, down 5% from March but up 2% from April 2012. Whey protein concentrate production was 37,617,000 lbs, down 3% from March but up 1% from April 2012. Dry buttermilk outturn was 11,285,000 lbs, down 3% from March but up 18% from April 2012.

Total manufacturers’ stocks of dry whey on April 30 were 69,058,000 lbs, down 11% from March but up 36% from April 2012. Total lactose stocks were 88,228,000 lbs, down 4% from March but up 10% from April 2012. Whey protein concentrate stocks totaled 57,993,000 lbs, up slightly from 57,758,000 lbs in March and up 20% from April 2012. Dry buttermilk stocks totaled 17,641,000 lbs, down 8% from March and down 26% from April 2012.

Butter production in April 2013 was 169,348,000 lbs, down 7% from March and down slightly from 169,896,000 lbs in April 2012.

Total cheese production was 928,223,000 lbs, down 3% from March but up 3% from April 2012.

Production of regular hard ice cream in April was 71,575,000 lbs, up 2% from both March 2013 and from April 2012. Low-fat ice cream production was 39,105,000 lbs, down 3% from March and down 12% from April 2012.
