Born in Olomouc, Czechoslovakia to a family that operated sugar and yeast facilities, Mr. Kulp moved to the United States in 1947 to study distillation technology in order to bring it back to the family business. But, following the 1948 Czech communist coup d’etat, his family advised him to remain in the United States.
Mr. Kulp later joined the American Institute of Baking in Chicago, and then moved along with the AIB to Manhattan in 1977. He remained at the AIB until 1988, at which point he was director of cereal chemistry research.
He was a fellow of the American Association of Cereal Chemists and following his retirement remained active through writing, editing and/or co-editing several books on cereal chemistry.
Survivors include his wife, Vlasta; two sons, Thomas (Kristen) and Charles (Eva); and three grandchildren, Patrick, Katherine and Adam.
A memorial service followed by a brief reception will be held at 10:30 a.m. CST on Sept. 21 at the Seven Dolors Catholic Church, 731 Pierre St., Manhattan.
