WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread rose in August while the price for whole wheat bread fell, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 140.5c, up 0.9c per lb from August but down 1.4c from September 2013. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in September increased in one region — up 4.7c in the South — and fell in three regions — down 1.5c in the Northeast, down 1.4c in the Midwest and down 1.1c in the West.

At 206.5c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 0.7c per lb from August but up 5.4c per lb from September 2013.

The national average price of family flour in September was 51.3c per lb, down 1.8c from August and down 0.9c from September 2013.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in September was 135c per lb, down 2.5c from August but up 5c from September 2013. Chocolate chip cookies were 333.3c per lb, down 4.2c from August and down 26.6 from September 2013. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 74.6c per lb, up 0.9c from July and up 0.5c from September 2013.
