BERWYN, ILL. — Four people were injured Nov. 11 after an explosion occurred about 2:30 p.m. at Turano Baking Co.’s truck maintenance garage in Oak Park, Ill. The garage structure is located across the street from Turano’s Berwyn bakery, which was unaffected by the incident.

According to Turano, the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but Oak Park fire battalion chief Kevin Wiley told the Chicago Tribune that the explosion occurred as workers were changing a propane tank in a truck. Mr. Wiley said the workers thought the tank was empty, but it was full and shot into the air, causing the walls of the structure to collapse.

“The safety of our employees and neighbors is of the utmost importance to us, and after a brief interruption in production as a precautionary measure, we have continued operation,” Turano said in a statement issued shortly after the explosion. “We thank the brave first responding firefighters and police officers of our nearby communities, and our employees, for their swift response and immediate action.”

Founded in 1962, Turano Baking produces sliced bread, buns and rolls in addition to supplying artisan bread to a number of local and national restaurant chains.
