WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread and whole wheat bread decreased in March, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 135.9c, down 2.9c per lb from February and down 5.3c from March 2013. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in March fell in all four regions — down 3.8c in the South, down 3.4c in the Northeast, down 2.3c in the Midwest, and down 1.4c in the West.

At 206.4c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 0.4c per lb from February but up 4c per lb from March 2013.

The national average price of family flour in March was 55.1c per lb, down 0.4c from February but up 5.2c from March 2013.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in March was 130.7c per lb, up 4.2c from February but down 1.6c from March 2013. Chocolate chip cookies were 342.4c per lb, up 9.5c from February but down 35c from March 2013. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 73.3c per lb, up 0.1c from February and up 1.9c from March 2013.
