WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread and whole wheat bread increased in April, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 138.8c per lb, up 2.9c from March but down 2.1c from April 2013. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in April increased in all four regions — up 5.5c in the South, up 3.3c in the Midwest, up 0.5c in the Northeast, and up 0.5c in the West.

At 209.2c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 2.8c from March and up 4.6c from April 2013.

The national average price of family flour in April was 54.7c per lb, down 0.4c from March but up 2.5c from April 2013.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in April was 124.1c per lb, down 6.6c from March and down 4.5c from April 2013. Chocolate chip cookies were 357.9c per lb, up 15.5c from March but down 15c from April 2013. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 75c per lb, up 1.7c from March and up 2.6c from April 2013.
