CHICAGO — Eating a bowl of instant oatmeal for breakfast was more satiating and helped to manage hunger better than the same amount of calories from a ready-to-eat, oat-based cereal, according to a study published on-line May 28 in Nutrition Journal.

The Quaker Oats Center of Excellence, PepsiCo R.&D. Nutrition funded the study. It involved researchers from PepsiCo R.&D. Nutrition and the Pennington Biomedical Research Center at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La.

Forty-three people completed the randomized, controlled crossover investigation. They completed three breakfast trials in random order at least a week apart. Each breakfast consisted of 150 calories of instant oatmeal, old-fashioned oatmeal or R.-T.-E. cereal. Each breakfast also included 67.5 calories of lactose-free skim milk. Satiety measures were assessed at 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours and 4 hours.
