WASHINGTON — To celebrate National Whole Grains Month, the American Bakers Association (A.B.A) will host its second annual Bakers’ Dozen Awards Reception, recognizing four key lawmakers for their support of the baking industry.
The A.B.A. plans to honor Senator Susan Collins of Maine, Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Representative John Kline of Minnesota and Representative Chuck Fleishmann of Tennessee at a reception Sept. 17 on Capitol Hill.
“The 2014 A.B.A. Bakers’ Dozen Award recipients have a proven track record of championing reform and supporting the key issues important to the wholesale baking industry, including reducing the renewable fuel standard requirements, reforming the U.S. Sugar Program and rescinding unnecessary (Department of Transportation) Hours of Service provisions,” said Lee Sanders, senior vice-president of government relations and public affairs at the A.B.A.
Kelly Knowles, senior director political affairs at the A.B.A., noted the association awarded three legislators during last year’s inaugural event. To increase participation from the baking industry, she said, this year’s event is being held in conjunction with A.B.A.’s fall policy conference and the Executive Leadership Development Committee’s public policy forum.
