WASHINGTON — The condition of the 2014 corn crop as of Aug. 25 was rated 73% good to excellent, 20% fair and 7% very poor to poor in the 18 major states, compared with 72% rated good to excellent the previous week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its most recent Crop Progress report. On the same date a year ago, 59% of the crop was rated good to excellent. In top-producing Iowa, 75% of the crop was rated good to excellent as of Aug. 24.

Conditions of the soybean crop as of Aug. 25 in the 18 major states declined to 70% rated good to excellent compared with 71% rated good to excellent the previous week, the U.S.D.A. said. On the same date a year ago, 58% of the crop was rated good to excellent. In top-producing Iowa, 73% was rated good to excellent as of Aug. 24.

Spring wheat conditions in the six major states were 66% good to excellent as of Aug. 24, compared with 68% in the previous week, and 67% good to excellent on the same date a year ago. In top-producing North Dakota 80% of the 2014 crop was rated good to excellent as of Aug. 24.

The U.S.D.A. said 83% of the corn crop in the 18 major states was in the dough stage, compared with 78% as the five-year average. Thirty-five per cent of the crop was dented compared with 43% as the five-year average for the date.

Ninety per cent of the soybean crop in the 18 major states was setting pods as of Aug. 24 compared with an 89% five-year average.
