Tic Tac Mixers offer two flavors per candy tablet, and Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. is introducing Starburst Sweets and Sours.

Hybrids and duos

Mashups are having a moment in the sweets and snacks marketplace. Tic Tac Mixers, for example, offer two flavors per candy tablet. Varieties include cherry that transitions to cola, and peach that transitions to lemonade.

“I refer to it as more bang for your buck — you pay for one candy and get two,” Ms. Whiteside said. “There’s a real value in that piece of candy because it satisfies a lot of different flavor profiles, a lot of different kinds of candy in one piece.”

Other such hybrid candies include Now and Later Splits from Ferrara Candy Co., which have two flavors per soft chew, including lemon-lime, lemon-blue raspberry and lemon-strawberry; and Tootsie Roll Industries’ new Tootsie Fruit Chew Pops, consisting of a hard candy with a chewy fruit chew center. Varieties include orange filled with lime, strawberry filled with lemon, lemon-lime filled with orange, and blue raspberry filled with cherry.

Similarly, Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co., a subsidiary of Mars, Inc., is introducing Starburst Sweets and Sours and Skittles Sweets and Sours. The Starburst product combines strawberry, blackberry, sour cherry and sour green apple chews, and the Skittles product contains sweet strawberry, sweet orange, sour watermelon, sour cherry and sour blue raspberry candies.
