Amoroso’s is a maker of Italian hearth-baked bread and rolls.

PHILADELPHIA — Amoroso’s Baking Co., maker of Italian hearth-baked bread and rolls, is closing its southwest Philadelphia bakery and plans to open a new facility in Bellmawr, N.J., as part of a joint venture with Ginsburg Bakery Inc.

The closing will affect about 200 employees who will be laid off beginning Oct. 6. The plant is expected to close by the end of the year.

Ginsburg Bakery, which started in 1903, for many years made wholesale bagels, rye bread, rolls and challah at a facility in Atlantic City, but earlier this year said it would close the plant as part of its merger with Amoroso’s Baking.

The merged company will operate under the name 151 Foods L.L.C., and will continue to produce Amoroso’s brand products.

Amoroso’s Baking was founded in 1904 when immigrants Vincenzo Amoroso and sons Salvatore and Joseph, opened a bakery in Camden, N.J. They moved to Philadelphia in 1914 and opened a new bakery in that city in 1960. Amoroso’s added frozen capabilities in 1974, and in 1987 it added “thaw and serve” and “par baked” programs that allowed the company to distribute its products in all 50 states and in Canada, Bermuda, Guam, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the Philippines.
