WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread decreased in May, while the price for whole wheat bread increased, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 138.2c, down 2.4c per lb from April and down 8.1c from May 2015. It was the lowest average price since March 2014. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in May decreased in three regions — down 9.2c in the Midwest, down 2.4c in the West and down 0.5c in the South — and increased in one region — up 4.2c in the Northeast.

At 196.2c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 4.7c per lb from April but down 7.9c per lb from May 2015.

The national average price of family flour in May was 52.5c per lb, up 0.4c from April and up 0.5c from May 2015.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in May was 132c per lb, up 2.6c from April but down 1.5c from May 2015. Chocolate chip cookies were 342.3c per lb, up 0.3c from April and up 21.1c from May 2015. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 74.7c per lb, up 4.4c from April and up 7.1c from May 2015.
