KANSAS CITY — Whole grains, salted caramel flavors and thin snacks are positioned for popularity in the food world, and the grain-based foods industry is tapping into those trends.

Hostess Brands, L.L.C. is offering healthful whole grains with its Mini Muffins launch. The muffins feature a new recipe that offers enhanced flavor and texture, the company said, along with 8 grams of whole grain per serving. Available in chocolate chip, blueberry and birthday cake varieties, the muffins are free of high-fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oils and contain 0 grams of trans-fat.

“With the addition of whole grain to our Mini Muffins recipe, moms can give their kids a snack they love and also one they feel good about,” said Becky Logan, senior brand manager of Hostess. “While they’re still a sweet indulgence, stocking your pantry with Mini Muffins has a nutritional upside as well.”

The fast-growing flavor trend of salted caramel crops up in Bimbo Bakeries USA’s newest launch. The company has introduced limited edition salted caramel English muffins and bagels under its Thomas’ brand.

“Salted caramel has quickly become a contender in the ever-competitive flavor landscape as consumers demand new and unique flavors, especially to usher in the fall season,” said Jon Silvon, senior marketing director of Thomas’ products. “We knew that salted caramel’s unique flavor profile would be a perfect addition to our popular line of limited edition products, and we’re excited for our fans to enjoy what we feel will be a hit flavor in our ongoing pursuit to surprise and delight them.”

Following the trend that thin is in, Mondelez International, Inc. is expanding its Oreo Thins family with two new flavors: lemon and chocolate. The lemon Oreo Thins feature lemon-flavored crème sandwiched between two golden wafer cookies, while the chocolate Oreo Thins offer a chocolate crème center and the brand’s signature chocolate wafer cookies.
