WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread fell 0.8c per lb, while the price for whole wheat bread increased 2.6c, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 134.1c, down 0.8c per lb from July and down 7.9c from August 2015. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in August decreased in three regions — down 3c in the West, down 2.3c in the South and down 1.8c in the Midwest — and increased in one region — up 5.5c in the Northeast.

At 199.2c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 2.6c per lb from July and up 3.6c per lb from August 2015.

The national average price of family flour in August was 54.6c per lb, up 0.3c from July and up 2.2c from August 2015.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in August was 129.2c per lb, down 2.8c from July and down 5.9c from August 2015. Chocolate chip cookies were 321.9c per lb, up 0.2c from July but down 1.4c from August 2015. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 72.9c per lb, down 1.1c from July but up 6c from August 2015.
