WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread declined 2.9c per lb in March, while the price for whole wheat bread fell 5.7c per lb, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 132.9c, down 2.9c per lb from February and down 8.7c from March 2016. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in March decreased in all four regions — down 3.8c in the Midwest, down 3.5c in the Northeast, down 2.5c in the South and down 2c in the West.

At 192.9c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 5.7c per lb from February but up 2c per lb from March 2016.

The national average price of family flour in March was 53.1c per lb, up 0.5c from February and up 1.9c from March 2016.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in March was 126.5c per lb, down 2.5c from February and down 7.6c from March 2016. Chocolate chip cookies were 334.6c per lb, down 4.4c from February and down 5.4c from March 2016. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 69.2c per lb, down 0.3c from February and down 1.9c from March 2016.
