WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread decreased 0.1c per lb in April, while the price for whole wheat bread jumped 8.5c per lb, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 132.8c, down 0.1c per lb from March and down 7.8c from April 2016. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in April increased in two regions — up 1.7c in the South and up 0.3c in the Northeast — and decreased in two regions — down 2.2c in the West and down 1.5c in the Midwest.

At 201.4c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 8.5c per lb from March and up 9.9c per lb from April 2016.

The national average price of family flour in April was 51.6c per lb, down 1.5c from March and down 0.5c from April 2016.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in April was 127.1c per lb, up 0.6c from March but down 2.3c from April 2016. Chocolate chip cookies were 340.4c per lb, up 5.8c from March but down 1.6c from April 2016. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 68.6c per lb, down 0.6c from March and down 1.7c from April 2016.
