WILMINGTON, DEL. — DuPont has announced the winners of the 2017 DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation. According to the company, the awards exist to honor “companies that have demonstrated major advancements in packaging technology to address the diverse and particular needs of consumers in markets around the world.”

First honors were awarded to the Fritz Water Vest, which allows the user to easily carry up to 20 lbs of water. Targeted for users in developing nations, the judges felt that the Water Vest best represented the award’s spirit of problem-solving, innovation and activism.

“The DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation demonstrate how creative, committed and agile the packaging industry is in addressing global issues and consumer needs,” said Bernard Rioux, global packaging leader, DuPont Performance Materials. “This year’s winners included solutions for novel food storage, fermenting food products, premium beauty products, new packaging materials to target millennials and more. This competition brings out the very best of everyone in the packaging industry, and we are thrilled to see innovators raising the bar each year.”

PepsiCo packaging award
A Gold Award was given to PepsiCo’s Granola Goes Nuts packaging.

Zume Pizza, Mountain View, Calif., was named a Diamond Award finalist for its Pizza Pod. Designed to keep pizza crisp and warm longer than conventional pizza boxes, the Pizza Pod is optimized to absorb maximum oil and moisture. It is also composed of sustainably-farmed sugarcane fiber rather than cardboard, making it fully biodegradable and compostable.

A Gold Award was given to PepsiCo’s Granola Goes Nuts packaging. Designed by PrintPack, USA, Atlanta, this flowwrapper incorporates an easy-open tab that allows consumers to keep their hands clean during on-the-go use. The packaging for Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Bakery Delights received a Silver Award. Bemis, Neenah, Wis., the designer, used a thin-gauge flow wrap film to mimic the look, feel and crinkle of paper.

This marks the 29th year of the Dupont Awards for Packaging Innovation, making it the packaging industry’s longest running independently judged competition. This year’s panel evaluated close to 150 entries from 24 countries.

“The DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation is exciting because of the global nature of the competition,” said lead judge David Luttenberger, CPP, global packaging director of Mintel.  “It is objective, you don’t have to use DuPont materials, and there is no entry fee.

“DuPont brings a great variety of disciplines of expertise for the judging panel to really get a global perspective across design, engineering, retail, converting and academia, which helps us hone in on what’s important and what’s valuable about packaging.”
