As Twinkies entered the market last week, we have to reflect on what this means to those employees who have lost their jobs. Months ago, in probably the most predictable response we’ve seen to the restart of Twinkies production by the new Hostess Brands, owned by Apollo Global Management and Metropoulos & Co., came from its former union. Yes, the B.C.T.G.M. previously noted it is “pleased” with Hostess’ decision to reopen four and possibly one more Hostess plants, and everyone is enthusiastic about bringing back the brand and jobs as well. But the union expressed that it is “extremely disappointed” on the company’s stance to hire non-union workers.
In the end, so-called “The Sweetest Comeback in the History of Ever” is a bittersweet reminder for those thousands of former employees who have lost their jobs.
