When it comes to tortillas, the product might be flat, but that certainly doesn’t describe the market. In one of the fastest-growing sectors of the baking industry, the Tortilla Industry Association (TIA) will showcase just what it’s made of at the TIA annual convention May 30-31 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

“Attendees can expect to see just how developed the tortilla industry is,” said Jim Kabbani, TIA executive director. “Many people don’t realize the machinery, advanced technology and ingredient science that goes into tortillas.”

The 2014 convention — which serves producers, suppliers and supporting services of any function of tortillas, flatbreads, wraps or chips — will be full of networking and business opportunities on the show floor as well as educational and training sessions.

This year, attendees can expect to see presenter Derek Moore, senior benefits consultant, the Leavitt Group, Cedar City, UT, once again address the impacts of the Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare.”

“Last year, it was still more or less theoretical; by the time of this year’s convention, we will all be dealing with the impact of it,” Mr. Kabbani noted. This and a host of many other educational sessions will be running from 8:30-noon each day of the convention. Expo and trade show exhibits will run from noon until 5 p.m. each day.

In addition to business and education opportunities, the TIA convention will also offer plenty of time for networking — and a bit of fun — at events such as the opening cocktail reception on May 29 and the May 30 awards and entertainment banquet, which will feature comedian Monique Marvez as emcee.

Attendees will also have a chance to blow off steam at the annual golf tournament on May 29 with an

11 a.m. tee time at the Wolf course within the Paiute Golf Resort. “We increased the hole-in-one prize to $30,000 this year,” Mr. Kabbani said. “We’re giving away other prizes as well, including a free room upgrade to a suite or a room comp to use when you come back on vacation.” The golf tournament requires separate registration; tickets are $99 each, and multiple tickets can be purchased at once.
