WASHINGTON — Milk production in the 23 major producing states totaled 14.7 billion lbs in June, down 0.1% from the same month of 2008, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its latest

Milk Production report.

It was the first same month year-over-year decline in 2009, except for February, which contained an additional day in 2008 because of leap year.

In June, production per cow in the 23 major producing states averaged 1,746 lbs, which was 10 lbs above June 2008. Additionally, there were 8.44 million cows on farms in the 23 states, which was 56,000 head less than in June 2008.

Milk production for May was revised to 15.5 billion lbs, up 0.5% from May 2008 and an increase of 46 million lbs from last month’s preliminary production estimate.

U.S. milk production in the second quarter totaled 48.8 billion lbs, up 0.1% from the April-June quarter in 2008, the U.S.D.A. said. In the first six months of 2009 milk U.S. production totaled 96.2 billion lbs, down 0.2% from the same period a year ago.
