Suntava extracts a vivid, natural red color from the proprietary non-GM purple corn hybrid it developed. The color substitutes effectively for FD&C Red 40, a synthetic food dye. The company’s extraction process maintains the integrity of the corn, enabling the grain’s application as a source of protein, starch, oil and whole-grain content. For example, the corn can be used in extruded crunch snacks, cereals and variously shaped crispy pieces. The extruded purple corn pieces exhibit a natural blue-purple color that changes to raspberry red with surface application of food-grade acidulants.
