A moisture-sensitive powder layer adheres to a grain-based food product such as ready-to-eat (RTE) cereal. The binding layer allows the powder to disperse into a liquid such as milk added just prior to consumption. The moisture-sensitive powder features one or more components of interest, which includes but is not limited to fizz powder mixes, flavorings, coloring agents, probiotic microorganisms, cocoa, sugar, mint, glitter, small particles of gel-like pieces, chocolate shavings or small pieces of dehydrated fruit or nuts. Such components enhance the experience of eating an otherwise nutritious grain-based food product or cereal.
