MORRISTOWN, N.J. — P.L. Thomas, now is distributing ChiaMax Omega-3 and Kaneka ubiquinol.

ChiaMax Omega-3, a proprietary defatted Salvia hispanica milled whole grain, may be used in such applications as nutrition bars and shakes. The ingredient manufactured by Valensa International, Eustis, Fla., is 51% fiber, 30% protein and 3% alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a form of omega-3 fatty acid. ChiaMax Omega-3 may replace whey proteins for potential cost reduction.

Ubiquinol contributes such benefits as cardiovascular and cognitive health and increased energy and stamina. The body converts coenzyme Q10, a well-known ingredient in the dietary supplement business, into ubiquinol, but the body’s ability to do so decreases as a person ages. The ubiquinol ingredient thus takes care of these conversion problems. Ubiquinol has eight times the power of CoQ10, said Rodger H. Jonas, director of national sales for P.L. Thomas, Morristown.

The ubiquinol ingredient from Kaneka Nutrients L.P., Pasadena, Texas, now is self-affirmed Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) for use in a range of foods and beverages, Mr. Jonas said. It is heat stable and water soluble, he added, and the use level is less than 1c per serving.
