CAMDEN, N.J. — Douglas R. Conant, president and chief executive officer of Campbell Soup Co., suffered injuries that included broken ribs following an automobile accident in New Jersey on July 2.

Mr. Conant, 58, was a passenger in the back seat of a vehicle on his way home from Campbell’s headquarters.

Campbell said Mr. Conant underwent surgery over the weekend and is expected to be hospitalized for a brief period.

"All reports indicate that Doug is doing very well, in good spirits, and progressing toward a full recovery," said Harvey Gloub, chairman. "We believe Doug can continue to lead the company effectively during his recuperation."
