DETROIT — The race for the world’s largest cupcake took another turn this week as GourmetGiftBaskets.com, a maker of upscale gourmet gift baskets, made a 1,224-lb, 4-foot high by 10-foot wide cupcake, shattering the previous 150-lb, 1-foot high by 2-foot wide record cupcake that was made July 18 by cakes.com.

"We started off with a goal of a 7,000-lb cupcake but fate intervened on (Aug. 14) when the baking was supposed to be complete," said Ryan Abood, chief executive officer of GourmetGiftBaskets.com. "The huge 8 by 8 foot oven was opened and we found that the weight of the expanding batter crushed one of the main convection tubes blowing hot air into the heart of the cupcake causing the batter to separate, liquefy and crush the center of the cupcake from the inside out."

The 7,000-lb cupcake included 200 lbs of flour, 200 lbs of sugar, 200 lbs of butter and oil and 1,000 eggs.

GourmetGiftBaskets.com said it will auction a 2-lb chunk of the record-breaking cupcake on Ebay, with proceeds going to Susan G. Komen’s Passionately Pink for the Cure.
