ELK GROVE VILLAGE, ILL. — Clear Lam Packaging, Inc. has developed renewable packaging for an organic product line of Snyder’s of Hanover. The bag, part of Clear Lam’s Project EarthClear packaging initiatives, is 90% plant-based. A yellow graphic on the upper right corner of the packages directs consumers to the back panel for more information on renewable packaging.

Elk Grove-based Clear Lam replaced petroleum-based plastics with a material derived primarily from renewable Ingeo PLA (polylactic acid) produced by NatureWorks L.L.C., Minnetonka, Minn. The renewable raw materials are produced with as little as half the energy as petroleum-based packaging, according to NatureWorks, and they generate as little as 52% fewer greenhouse gas emissions in the manufacturing process.

Clear Lam’s Project EarthClear focuses on the three initiatives of designing packaging made from renewable raw materials, using recycled content plastic and/or paper, and developing new ways to reduce the weight of packaging.
